Chief Boatswain’s Mate Laurence Delaney Devereau, USNR, was a member of the crew of the Reuben James I (DD-245).

The Reuben James on convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic, was hit by a torpedo on October 31, 1941, from a German U-boat and sunk.  It was the first United States Navy ship sunk by enemy action during World War II.
